From the Friends of GSA;
This past Friday, May 23rd, the annual Washington State Gay Straight Alliance (GSA) Banquet and Recognition Ceremony was held at the Lakeside School. The event is co-sponsored by the Washington Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network (GLSEN). Speakers and presenters included State Senator Ed Murray, City Council member Sally Clark, WA State Human Rights Commissioner Rev. Dr. Jerry Hebert and State Representative Jamie Pederson, as well as many other community leaders. Senator Patty Murray and Mayor Greg Nickels also wrote letters of support and appreciation.
This was a significant and high profile event, and the efforts and struggles of our local Mt Si High School GSA did not go unnoticed. Of the eight awards presented for the Washington GSA’s, they took home the following awards:
Most Inspirational GSA Member: Jacqueline Ferland
Advisor of the Year: Eric Goldhammer
GSA of the Year: Mount Si High School
Rob Goldsworthy Outstanding Educator of the Year: Kit McCormick
Washington state has approximately 175 GSAs. Please join us in congratulating our local chapter in the recognition of their efforts.

Perhaps now our honorable MSHS principal will remove that letter of reprimand from Ms. McCormick's personnel file and issue HER a letter of apology as well.

Congrats Mount Si, we are even more of a joke because of this ridiculous club. What are they honored for, a club defending people who CHOOSE a gay lifestyle? Here is a question, what positive impact do the students and advisors of this club do for the school?

They are honored for standing up for people that are abused by douchebags like yourself.

what exactly is the "gay lifestyle."
People are constantly using phrases which they don't know the meaning of. In doing so, they sound like broken records.
It isn't the fact that people "don't know the meaning of" of a gay lifestyle that makes Mt Si parents sound like a broken record, its the fact that day after day, that is all that happens at the school, pro-gay propaganda. What is wrong with adressing this issue, especially since supporters of this "gay lifestyle" choice want to talk about it through the whole school day?
Gay lifestyle?-not sure I know the meaning of that term.
Let's see, I know some of my friends have more money than me - boy is their "lifestyle" different than my penny-pinching-two-kids-in-college lifestyle.
I have trouble inviting some vegetarian friends over for dinner, since their lifestyle doesn't include meat. Don't get me started on Vegan...
Then there are those who are childless by choice. Talk about a different lifestyle - they have no concept of picking your family vacation based on where your son's soccer team will be playing each summer.
But gay people? Hmmm. My gay friends just go to work, pay their bills, raise their kids and volunteer in their community. Not much different than my lifestyle. Maybe I'm gay too?
Douchebag? Boy, that hits below the belt.
When can we start talking about homosexuality without all the name calling? People have a variety of beliefs about the origins of homosexual desire and the impact of homosexuality on the fabric of American life. I, for one, struggle to reconcile multiple ideas and possibilities in my own mind. I do know this for sure, there are a couple really pro-gay posters on this blog who are wearing my patience thin with their habit of labeling anyone who doesn't agree with them "anti-gay." You are not winning my heart when all I can hear is the incessant beat of "We're right, you're wrong!"

Here is an answer: bring recognition to the fine educators and tolerant students who are a part of our school's GSA, despite formidable opposition, intolerance and misrepresentation; bring recognition to the integrity and intelligence of this group.
Have the posters who think this honor is a joke or in some way dubious noticed where this celebration was held? Have you heard of Lakeside School? Possibly one of the very finest high schools in Washington, or the nation, for that matter.... you may have heard of Bill Gates.. or Paul Allen... both of them went there... and so have some kids from some wonderful families here in the Valley.
OK, so Lakeside is private. It is an amazing place... Integrity, Inclusion, Consideration... is says on its masthead.. google Lakeside School Seattle. Check out its mission statement. This school is not afraid of many things that are at issue in SVSD... this is the school that hosted the banquet that honored our MSHS GSA and Kit McCormick.
As a parent of three MSHS grads and three college grads, I am very impressed with the honor and recognition heaped on our school from outside the Valley. And I am not without hope that at some point that our GSA and Kit will also be honored by many more here as well.
It takes a while to change tightly held opinions and for folks to be brave enough to open mindedly examine their beliefs. I am optimistic.
What seems like a joke to most people outside the Valley are the folks who characterize GSA as a "ridiculous club" ... and who are out of touch with modern science, as they hold closed-minded onto their beliefs about homosexuality being a choice... and continue with misrepresentation and exaggerations about events at MSHS. Not a funny joke at all.
u know i am not white and when i get made fun of i dont get sad about it i stand straight up and proud for who i am. Only pussies and unsecure people need a day to get respect.And gays are wrong.
